What’s All The Fuss About Consumer Credit Counseling?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:18 pm

Consumer credit counseling is all about helping those in deep debt get out of it in some way. Consumer credit counseling has experienced a major boom in recent years and this is really not a good sign. Although these services are extremely helpful and can help get you back on track where your finances are concerned, it is a sign that the number of Americans that find themselves in debt is on the rise. Many things can cause debt; some may be your fault, some not. No one can blame somebody for having fallen into debt for no fault of his or her own, but the trend clearly shows that most people find themselves in debt because they are living out of their means. The main reason for this is the widespread overuse of credit cards.

Earlier it was thought that if you’re in debt, all that’s left for you to do is to file for bankruptcy. These days, with consumer credit counseling available, bankruptcy need not be your fate. You could get help from these services. What they do is try and get your finances back on track using various methods and techniques. Of course, at the end of the day, it is up to you to actually put in all the required work and implement the plans they devise for you.

Credit counseling is now a mandatory step before you file for bankruptcy. You are required to have tried credit counseling before you are permitted to file for bankruptcy. This is a measure taken in an effort to reduce the number of people who do so. Bankruptcy also includes lawyer and court fees that could be difficult for someone with no money to handle. The advantage of this is that if you were actually able to get back on track then you’d be saved from having bankruptcy spoil your credit report. Bankruptcy can appear on your credit report for up to ten years and this doesn’t help you in the least bit when applying for any other loan in the future.

Keep in mind though, that not everyone can afford counseling. It is usually not free, although there are some organizations that offer free consumer credit counseling. But if you are able to avail of this service, be sure to make good use of it since it can actually help you avoid having to file for bankruptcy. These services help you by reducing your monthly repayment amount, lowering your interest rates, getting your late fee waived and also offering you loan consolidation. If you want to get your life back on track, don’t give up without having tried consumer credit counseling.
